Can Serrat- Artist Residency

Arriving in Spain

Leaving Rome was tough. We had such a wonderful time and were very comfortable in our little apartment.

I did find it difficult to think about my work and found my thoughts interrupted by dark images.  A visit to St Peters Basilica had been confronting and depressing. The Vatican is a men's place. The decoration more grotesque than ornate. The conspicuous wealth was overwhelming.

Arriving in Barcelona I was reminded why I love Spain so much. Barcelona is beautiful and lively and living in the present. Aside from some accommodation issues our transition went smoothly.

A 45 minute bus trip up to El Bruc and we arrived at Can Serrat.

After 7 days here at Can Serrat I feel relaxed and reenergized. The ideas are flowing and a work plan is being hatched.

Sharing a table with other artists is such a wonderful experience. The wine, conversation and laughter have flowed freely. The space and quiet time to work is respected by all.

El Bruc
Yesterday New Zealand Printmaker Toni Mosley ran a workshop for resident artists and visitors. The time to play and explore another medium was fun and rewarding.

In the evening Artist Shiao-Ping  Wang taught us all how to make dumplings. Hundreds of dumplings  were consumed at dinner. Washed down with the requisite Spanish red.

Friendships are being forged and souls are being nurtured in this place. The results will manifest slowly and no doubt last a long while .

Monserrat is a national park located north of Barcelona
